I've spent twenty years teaching, the last eight of them teaching 5th grade at my current school. Every year, my class memorizes “The Village Blacksmith” — the poem this place is named for.
The blacksmith in the poem shapes iron with heat, pressure, and patience until something durable takes hold. Teaching works the same way, just on minds instead of metal. That's the whole idea behind this place: the classroom is the forge, and what gets built here are the tools that make the work of shaping minds a little easier.
